Beautiful Birmingham in pictures after London reviewer blasts ‘disappointing view’ from restaurant

Author Adam Kay loved Opheem’s ‘complex and confident’ food for The Times, but he wasn’t impressed by the view. And so we decided to find a few of the ‘beautiful views’ in Birmingham to see if we could coax him back to Brum.

A ‘sensational’ Birmingham restaurant received a rave review from The Times on Sunday, though the location left the reviewer wishing for curtains to cover up views across Summer Row. Writer Adam Kay called the ten-course tasting menu at Opheem ‘complex and confident’, though he didn’t love the Brummie street it’s on anywhere near as much as he loved Aktar Islam’s cooking.

So we decided next time Adam Kay makes a visit to Birmingham, we should give him some ideas for wonder around the town to see some of the spectacular views we have on offer.

Birmingham has transformed over the last few decades into a fantastic place to visit and, although Summer Row may not be most attractive, we thought we could suggest a few other places to walk off his £410 meal.

St Philip’s Cathedral is beautiful both inside and out. Perhaps he could stare in wonder at the magnificent stained glass windows created by locally-born artist Sir Edward Burne-Jones, or he could take in Oozells Square at Brindleyplace. At this time of year it can rival any Japanese city with fantastic cherry blossom trees.

Brindley Place and the whole canal network from Gas Street is always fantastic and the place looks fantastic at night. Just a little further out of town is Cannon Hill Park, always a gorgeous place for a wander.

So aside from buying some curtains for the lounge at Opheem’s, and fixing the sign to the bogs, perhaps Birmingham has just a little more on offer. Come back any time Adam and take a look for yourself.
