Brighton’s Carl Rushworth given glowing praise and England message

The on-loan Albion goalkeeper is coming to end of an impressive season with Swansea City to follow campaigns at Walsall and Lincoln.

He has been part of England under-21 squads, earning one cap, and has worked with goalkeeping coach Martyn Margetson, who splits his time between the Swans and the Three Lions.

In a comment with echoes of Michael Flynn tipping Ben White for England when he was on loan at Newport County, Swansea boss Luke Williams said: “Yes, he’s that good.

“But it’s not just about how good you are as a player or goalkeeper. It’s also about the personality, and he’s top.”

Both Rushworth and James Beadle will return to Albion after seasons in the EFL.

Beadle, of England under-20s, has been part of Sheffield Wednesday’s battle against relegation since moving from Oxford in mid-season.

Kjell Scherpen, whose Albion contract runs until 2027, shone on loan at Sturm Graz before knee surgery cut his season short.

Williams, the former Albion development coach, believes Rushworth has been “incredible” this season.

He added: “I think he will be the first to say that he has worked with the top goalkeeping coach and it’s been a good experience for him.

“He has played for a really top club and had a lot of minutes in a really good league so it has been really beneficial all round for everyone.

“I think it’s likely he’ll be playing in the big league or in the shake-up for that.

“That’s what I anticipate.”
