Shillong: The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission has sought reports on the killing of three persons from Assam in East Garo Hills and the ostracism of a woman on the suspicion of practising witchcraft in West Jaintia Hills district.In a notification issued here on Thursday, the MHRC secretary said the Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of the matter after media reports about the charred remains of three Assam residents, which were recovered from East Garo Hills district, surfaced.The human rights body issued a notice to the DGP to submit an action taken report within a month from the date of receipt of the order.The charred bodies of the men identified as Jomor Ali, Noor Mohammad and Zahidul Islam of Assam were recovered by the police from inside a pit in a jungle near the link road in Rogu Alda village under Rongjeng police station on Wednesday.“Prima facie, it appears to be a case of criminal rivalry among car lifters and cattle thief groups,” SP Stephen Aleric Rynjah said.The MHRC also asked the DGP to submit a detailed report within 15 days on the ostracism of a woman, hailing from Lumlakhait village in West Jaiñtia Hills, by the village council accusing her of practising witchcraft.
