Stalker stabs MCA student at Karnataka university | India News

HUBBALLI: Angry after his repeated overtures were turned down, a 24-year-old stabbed an MCA (Master of Computer Application) student in the corridors of BVB campus of KLE Technological University in Hubballi, Karnataka, on Thursday afternoon. The student succumbed on her way to KIMS Hospital, about 2km from the campus.

The assailant, said to be from another college, tried to flee after the attack, but was overpowered and handed over to police by shocked students and staff of the institute. He has been identified as Fayaz Kondikoppa from Belagavi district.

The deceased, Neha Hiremath (24), was the daughter of a Congress corporator, Niranjan Hiremath.

Police said Neha didn’t attend college for two months due to typhoid. On Thursday, she came to write her examination. As she came out of the exam hall around 4.45pm, Fayaz whipped out a knife and repeatedly stabbed her in the back and the neck till she collapsed in a pool of blood.

Fayaz and Neha reportedly studied together for an UG course. Police sources said Fayaz had been warned by Neha’s parents 5-6 months ago to stay away. They would escort Neha to college and back. Police commissioner Renuka Sukumar said Fayaz claimed he was “friendly” with Neha, but she avoided him. “We arrested the attacker within an hour of the incident.”

KLE Technological University vice-chancellor Ashok Shettar said the campus, with 10,000 students, was “always well-guarded”. “We’ll scale up the security, and appeal to students and parents to bring to our notice if there is any issue related to the life or future of the students,” he said. Hubballi-Dharwad East MLA Prasad Abbayya expressed shock over the incident.
