Support for buying electric cars could rise in Latvia / Article

“The support could be available in the 3rd quarter of this year,” Minister Kaspars Melnis (Greens and Farmers Union) said in a press release.

Currently, the support program provides €4,500 for the purchase of a new electric car and €2,250 for the purchase of a used electric car and a new plug-in hybrid car.

Additional support is available if a person scraps their old internal combustion engine car, for which they will receive €1,000.

Since 2015, the number of electric cars in Latvia has increased 33 times. Currently, there are 6,576 registered electric cars on the road in Latvia, according to the Ministry of Climate and Energy. A particular surge in electric car purchases took place in 2023 when electricity prices on the stock exchange fell and various support measures were available, the ministry said.

The state support program has helped people buy 1,650 electric and hybrid cars in two years.

The support program started in spring 2022.
