Tipplers stock up for dry days in Tamil Nadu, Tasmac sales double | Chennai News

A shopping frenzy on Tuesday pushed sales at Tasmac, to ₹289 crore – double the usual daily average of ₹140 crore. The outlets which were closed on Wednesday and Thursday will also be shut on Friday.

Chennai topped the sales, accounting for ₹68.35 crore of the overall sales. The average weekday sales of Chennai region, which includes Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpattu districts, are about ₹32 crore, said Tasmac sources. After Chennai, the Trichy region recorded the secondhighest sales with ₹59 crore, followed by Salem with ₹57 crore and Madurai with ₹56 crore. Coimbatore region recorded the lowest with ₹49 crore.

This is the third time Tasmac outlets have been closed for three days for elections, following 2019 and 2021.

However, Tasmac sources said that sales were less compared to previous elections. The liquor sales during the 2021 elections were about 300% of regular sales. In 2023, throughout the model code of conduct, the sales were just about average, and Tasmac officials credited it to strict enforcement of prohibition of bulk sales.

Earlier, fearing they would be asked to close shops on Tuesday evening and reopen at 6 pm on Friday, Tasmac staff requested management to open and close shops at regular times. They were told that the Election Commission has asked all Tasmac outlets and recreational clubs not to sell or serve liquor for three days.
